STEM Matters - Jonathan "Muchiri Mbugua"

Jonathan “Muchiri” Mbugua (17 years), is an aspiring Engineer and a junior attending Centennial High School in Maryland, USA. Muchiri serves as the President of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Jr. Chapter in Howard County, MD. He is also the Treasurer for Alpha Achievers, at his school, a program that develops African American males to promote academic excellence, leadership and community service.


Muchiri is an academician and has received numeral awards of academic achievement and recognition. He recently was one of 30 selected in a competitive Summer Academy of Math & Science (SAMS) at Morgan State University.


An active student-athlete, Muchiri plays several sports that include but are not limited to Football, Basketball, and Track. He appreciates the arts and enjoys playing the saxophone. He has performed in various community events, such as Holiday concerts at Bowie State University, FAME.org, Embassy events, Bridgeway Community Church youth band, and other special events.


Muchiri enjoys traveling both locally and internationally. He participated in the SHUJAA inaugural ‘rites of passage” program, bridging the gap between his African & African American experiences. Also, he recently participated in a mission trip to Quintana Roo, Mexico with the youth from his church. He has enjoyed visiting his family in his country of heritage, Kenya. Muchiri is the oldest son to the proud parents, John & Rosalind Muchiri. He is a great role model to his sister Njeri and brother Karuga. Congratulations to Beau Muchiri!
